In late 2023/early 2024, well before I started writing the space regency, I was trying to brainstorm it on Sudowrite using the free starting credits, and…didn’t get really anywhere with it. This was I think my first experience with AIs other than the image generator Midjourney, and that probably had more to do with my lack of success than anything in particular about Sudowrite. So, I got curious about Novelcrafter, partly because I heard good things about its abilities to store and organize world-building notes, and partly because it could integrate with the Claude AI family, which I use fairly heavily on the free plan; mostly for dictation cleanup and sometimes brainstorming. So, I opened an account on Novelcrafter and one on Openrouter.ai, because it was one of the options for bringing an AI into Novelcrafter, bought a few credits on Openrouter to pay for the AI usage, and imported the space regency (now at 16000 words) into the free trial of Novelcrafter…

Frequently Seen Questions About Writing
Occasionally, I offer moral support and solutions that worked for me in the comments section of other writing blogs, but I don’t do a lot of it here. What works for me might not work for you, and vice versa. That being said, I’m seeing certain things come up over and over again in certain places on the web, and I feel like I have to put my oar in. Since nobody asked me, I can’t call them “Frequently Asked Questions,” but I feel comfortable calling this “Frequently Seen Questions…”

Sometimes I use Midjourney to brainstorm what settings in my novels look like. And sometimes that works, and sometimes, as with this alleged depiction of a stable aboard a steampunk airship, it really doesn’t.

State of the Author, Start of 2025
My plans for the New Year are always kind of vague, because “Mann tracht un Gott lacht” (Man plans, and God laughs).

I did a Midj thing based on a joke about Elon Musk, Techlord of Mars, and an internet friend with a twitter account very kindly decided to circulate it. Thank you Foxfier!

-I have vague ideas for Hunter Healer King, Book 2.
Midjourney Monday: Star Wars Villains Working for Mary Kay
Prompt for most of these is either “[NAME] working for mary kay” or “[NAME] working for mary kay with a pink cadillac.” Will usually be pretty obvious which is which.

I prompted a bunch of Oz-themed images about a year ago, so I thought I’d compare and contrast those with the most recent ones I’ve gotten out of Midjourney.

Today we have a bunch of contemporary actors in Regency dress, as generated by Midjourney and cleaned up by me. I will invite you to guess who I was casting in which Pride and Prejudice role. Yes, some of them are not very good likenesses, and no I am not going to reroll in Midjourney again. Yes, very few of them are in the age bracket now that the characters were in the story. No, I don’t really care. Yes, a couple of them have been in Pride and Prejudice before, and no, I am not casting them in the same roles.

I wasn’t actually trying for Silmarillion characters when I started playing with the AI prompts (mostly involving niji 5 mode, Alphonse Mucha, and Harry Clarke and sometimes Frank Frazetta) which led to these Midjourney-generated pictures. But, somehow or other, that’s what I ended up with. Minor tweaks were made to hide or fix distorted hands, and add pointed ears to the Felagund character (the original prompt had been for a human D&D style cleric.)
