I just finished reworking a core setpiece late in Hunter Healer King 3 and am now writing the bridge from that into another pre-written scene. This part below (slightly censored for spoilers) was part of the prewritten scene, but no longer fit in for continuity reasons.
I helped support Maxim through the tunnels back to the caves where the Armor was kept. He kept protesting that it wasn’t safe for me, but I ignored him. When he wasn’t protesting, he was telling us about my mother. Apparently her people were some kind of distant kin to his people…in the days before his people had settled the island of Thule, and long before Thule had fallen. We were not any kind of cousin close enough to matter. Of course we had to find out the truth when we no longer had much chance at a life together. Victor had somewhat grudgingly agreed to lead the party, while the other Stormcrows kept to the rear, dragging the rotary gun with them on its wheeled mount. Jerome hung back by the rotary gun, apparently ready to shoot down his nephew if he turned, along with myself and his own son as collateral damage. He only came forward when we reached the entrance to the Stormcrows’ base, so that the sentries would let us in.
Ambrose was waiting just inside. “What…?” His voice trailed away as he got a good look at Maxim under the electric lights. Maxim nodded to his uncle and let go of me. He staggered into the first of the three cells off the entrance tunnel. Victor followed him, and shut the iron bars of the door.
“Uncle, could you draw a little quicksteel from the Armor’s reactor?” Victor asked. “Father, I’m sure you have responsibilities elsewhere.”
“The safety of this cave complex is my responsibility,” Jerome retorted. “The (SPOILER) in that cell with you is the greatest threat in this place.”
