This conversation originally took place with the two leads from the Hunter Healer King series talking in an elevator. In revisions, they’re actually having this convo on horseback, so the physical movements or “business” surrounding the conversation are different. For the record, Chloe and Maxim are not actually any kind of cousins, they just have faulty information about her family at this point.

Chloe went pale under her rather tan complexion, took a step towards me, and then stopped. “That would make us first cousins,” she said.
“Assuming the midwives are correct about your mother, yes. The priests can sometimes be persuaded to grant a dispensation from the ban on first cousins marrying, but…”
“I don’t care,” Chloe said fiercely. “I don’t like the idea of being…close…to a cousin…that way. I hate it. Almost as much as I love you.”
I hated it too. That was the terrible thing. Faced with this news, we could not even bring ourselves to find comfort in each other’s arms.
